Background of the Study

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a significant global challenge, with substantial implications for food security, particularly in rural areas. Sokoto State, located in northern Nigeria, is one of the regions most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including erratic rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, and desertification. These environmental changes threaten agricultural productivity, which is the primary source of livelihood for rural communities in the state.

Climate change has already led to disruptions in food production, reduced crop yields, and a decrease in food availability in Sokoto State, directly impacting food security. Rural communities, which rely heavily on subsistence farming, are particularly at risk, as they lack the resources and infrastructure to adapt to these environmental changes (Aliyu & Mohammed, 2024). This study will investigate the effects of climate change on food security in Sokoto State’s rural communities, focusing on the challenges faced by farmers and their coping strategies.

Statement of the Problem

Food security in Sokoto State’s rural communities is under threat due to the adverse effects of climate change, including unpredictable weather patterns, reduced agricultural productivity, and growing food insecurity. Despite the severity of this issue, there is limited research exploring how climate change is impacting food security in these communities. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between climate change and food security in Sokoto State, focusing on rural farming communities.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity and food security in Sokoto State.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by rural communities in adapting to climate change.
  3. To explore coping strategies employed by rural communities in Sokoto State to mitigate the effects of climate change on food security.

Research Questions

  1. How has climate change affected agricultural productivity and food security in Sokoto State’s rural communities?
  2. What are the main challenges faced by rural communities in adapting to climate change in Sokoto State?
  3. What coping strategies do rural communities in Sokoto State employ to ensure food security in the face of climate change?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Climate change significantly reduces agricultural productivity and food security in Sokoto State’s rural communities.
  2. Rural communities in Sokoto State face significant challenges in adapting to the effects of climate change.
  3. Coping strategies such as crop diversification and water management improve food security in Sokoto State’s rural communities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on rural communities in Sokoto State, particularly those dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods. Limitations include difficulties in measuring the long-term effects of climate change and potential challenges in obtaining accurate data on food security.

Definitions of Terms

  • Climate Change: Long-term changes in temperature, precipitation, and other atmospheric conditions that affect the environment.
  • Food Security: The state in which all people have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs.
  • Coping Strategies: Methods used by communities to manage or adapt to challenges, particularly environmental or economic stressors.
